I love creepy stuff. I can frequently be found browsing Reddit’s No Sleep forum against my better judgment. I’ve been following the Dear David case obsessively. I own black lipstick and had a definite goth phase in my early teens. I’ve always been obsessed with vampires and witches and my greatest ambition at age 7 was to be a rich widow. (I’d just watched The Addam’s Family Values for the first time, what can I say).
Coincidentally, I’m also terrified of pretty much everything. Okay, terrified is a strong word, but I’ve always been an incredibly anxious person (hello Generalized Anxiety Disorder). So I find the fact that I’m drawn to the creepy, macabre and unexplained kind of hilarious since I can’t make a telephone call without sweating and I had to sleep on the floor of my parents room the first time I saw Sixth Sense… at age 14…
ANYWAYS. I love creepy stuff. And I couldn’t get into podcasts at all, until I found a veritable treasure trove of series about unexplained phenomena, hauntings, true ghost stories, and other creepy crawly goodness.
So today, Friday the 13th, I’m sharing some of my favorite podcasts that will definitely make you want to sleep with the lights on.
The Black Tapes
The Black Tapes is one of the first podcasts I fell in love with. It’s a serial-style fiction series that follows Alex, an intrepid reporter, as she seeks to uncover the truth surrounding Dr. Strand, an abrasive explorer of the unexplained who doesn’t Believe™️. The third season just started, and I can’t wait to dive back into this deliciously creepy storyline.
Unexplained takes a “real life” approach by exploring and examining various unexplained phenomena that have happened throughout history. Things like hauntings, disappearances, so-called alien sightings, and demon possessions.
For those fellow creeps who have spent any amount of time on the internet, you’ve definitely stumbled across Reddit’s No Sleep forum. The forum is a place for people to share their creepiest stories, most fiction but intended to be believed. No Sleep is the companion podcast, where people read the best and spookiest creepypastas from Reddit. It has resulted in more than a few late-night panics upon hearing something creak or move in my apartment.
Criminal is more about true crime, which never scares me as much as it ought to. My best friend is super into true crime podcasts, and I know they should freak me out, because they’re things that have definitely actually happened. But for some reason ghosts and unexplained phenomena freaks me out wayyyy more. Still, listen to this for some seriously effed up things that humans have done to each other.
Lore explores the true stories behind those dark and creepy myths, stories and urban legends that fuel so many horror movies and childhood nightmares. They’ve covered everything from Bloody Mary to “play the album backwards for a message from the devil” kind of stuff, so you know it’s good.
Creepy is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a collection of narrated creepypastas and internet urban legends that you’ve definitely heard before… but still manage to terrify you.
Haunted Places is a brand new podcast that’s dedicated to exploring real-life haunted places (shocker, right?). They only have one episode up so far, debuting today, but it’s guaranteed to be a creepy show-stopper.
