Over the last several months, I’ve noticed a troubling pattern in myself. After long days of work, where I’m on my computer and phone all day, I’ll come home, open my computer, start doing blog stuff, or scrolling through social media, or whatever, and I will stay on my computer or on my phone until I go to sleep.
I’ve often complained about not having or making the time to do other things I used to enjoy, like reading or crafts. I’ve had a harder time falling asleep lately, and I feel more tired and stressed out during the day. I realized that it’s probably from constantly feeling plugged in and staring at my screen. Between work, blogging, fun, and Netflix, I feel like there’s always something I can or should be doing on my computer. I’m working on cutting back the screen time a bit – this year already, I’ve read more books than I had the entire time I was in college. So that’s a start!
But I wanted to share seven things you can do to relax and unwind that don’t involve a screen – because seriously, it gets to be too much sometimes.
Read a book.
There are few things in life as relaxing as crawling into bed with a good book, in my opinion. Knowing that I was done with school and would likely have more spare time, I set myself a Goodreads Reading Challenge in January to read 50 books this year. So far I’ve read 15 this year, and I’m on track with my challenge. I’ll probably be posting about the books I read this month, because there were a lot!
Learn a craft.
Crafts and DIY projects are some of the most rewarding ways to relax. For one, you’re actively creating something with your hands, which is great for creativity and brain power. Plus, after you’re done, you have an awesome new project to use. I’ve been sharing some more DIY tutorials lately, like my DIY Mid-Century Modern End Table and a DIY Marble Serving Tray.
Take a bath.
Soaking in a luxurious bath with candles and a glass of wine is one of the best ways to unwind before bed. Grab some bubble bath or a bath bomb and really pamper yourself!
You guys have seen the emergence of the “adult” coloring books in the past year or so, right? Basically, studies have shown that coloring in a coloring book can reduce stress and anxiety, even in adults. So, now you can buy “adult coloring books” just about everywhere. Not to brag, but I have a pretty kick-ass Harry Potter one. If you don’t want to buy a whole book, a quick Google search for “coloring pages for adults” will turn up all sorts of interesting and pretty patterns you can print out and color in.
Do some yoga.
I love yoga, but it’s another thing that I never have or make time for. Search for yoga videos on Youtube (yeah, I know, technically it involves a screen, but shut up) and do some stretches before bed.
Write down your thoughts.
Get a pretty journal and write down details about your day. It doesn’t matter if your day wasn’t “interesting” – just write what you had for lunch, or describe a cute dog you saw on your way to work. Just writing your thoughts and feelings has a cathartic effect that’s perfect for relaxing after a stressful day.
Whip up a batch of grandma’s cookies from scratch or make brownies with a mix – just get in the kitchen and bake something tasty! It’s relaxing, plus at the end, you have cookies.
