For some of us, staying organized is never an easy task. But after I graduated college, it became more of a challenge to keep on top of tasks easily and effectively. Luckily, I have a full-time office job that keeps me on task, but recently I realized that my system of haphazard sticky notes strewn around my office couldn’t last forever.
So I decided I needed a new system in place to stay on top of things and not get too overwhelmed in my day to day life. Here’s what I’ve come up with to help stay organized!
Use a planner
I’ve been using the Erin Condren Life Planner, and it really lives up to the name. I love the monthly and daily views, and it’s got all sorts of various add ons that you can get. In mine, I’ve added snap-in sticky notes, a snap-in dry erase to-do list, and a monthly budget worksheet. It’s a one-stop shop to stay organized and I love it. Plus, the customization is adorable! It feels like a fashion accessory I’m toting around, not a stuffy day planner.
Everything in its place
Trust me, your life will be 1000% easier if you just put things away every day. I am still learning this at 23, and I expect I’ll be working on it for quite some time. But if you can just decide where everything goes, and put it back there when you’re done using it, you won’t end up with a room or an office that looks like a tornado swept through.
I use my planner for work and personal life, so I got those colorful Sharpie pens to keep things straight. I use one color for work stuff and another for personal stuff so far. And color coding goes for sticky notes and folders and all sorts of things. I even color code my Google Calendar!
Clear your inbox
Another thing that really helps me is trying to clear out my inbox every day. If I don’t, I get super overwhelmed with the amount of information in it, and things tend to get lost to the ether. So I make use of folders in my inbox, and flag things to follow up on. That way I can remove them from my inbox but still know what I need to focus on.
Make a priority list
It’s easy to get caught up in an endless to-do list and never actually accomplish anything. So instead, I try to make a list of priorities. Things that I definitely need to finish today, things that I need to accomplish by the end of the week, and things that are looser but still need to happen at some point. This way, I don’t get all caught up in details and not getting things done, and I can be more productive and effective.
